Directors Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein discussed in interviews some of the reasons why the film's script went through so much problems during production, which included principal photography starting without a finished script. The first two films were originally one script, but this one was the first sequel starring Selene which was written without any previous story, which is why it was in development since 2009, but nobody was ever happy about the script. By the time they were hired, Marlind and Stein even went and worked on the script before filming, and Len Wiseman and producer Gary Lucchesi also worked with them on it.Main problem they had with the script is the tone of the story which kept changing with every new writer, going from a less serious "wink-wink" tone to a more darker one. The ending also kept getting changed during all the re-writing. One which is in the film wasn't even the one they had when filming started. Second unit director and visual effects supervisor James McQuaide also had some issues with the unfinished script because he didn't know how to design all the CGI creatures until very late in post-production. Besides the ones who are credited in the film, there were other uncredited writers who worked on it, some who even wrote entire unused scripts.
