The joke the barman has with Jed when he and Andy were out for lunch early in the film is old ( "Hey doc it hurts when I do this with my arm.. then don't do that") but it was an original of the celebrated British standup comedian Tommy Cooper from about 1974. He specialized in those type of one liners and upturning the English language and all its quirks.
