James Cameron pitched the film to 20th Century Fox with the single line of "Romeo and Juliet on the Titanic." Leonardo DiCaprio starred in Romeo + Giulietta di William Shakespeare (1996) the year before. In a peculiar twist of fate, it was during the Romeo + Juliet (1996) shoot that Leo was urged to accept the offer of the Titanic lead by co-star Paul Rudd who, though his father is an avid historian of the great ship, had auditioned unsuccessfully for a key role.
