Adam Wingard originally wanted James Rolfe (best known for the YouTube show The Angry Video Game Nerd (2004)) to play the role of Dr Bernie Hayes, but Rolfe immediately turned down the role due to scheduling conflicts. Wingard, who credits Rolfe's 'Godzillathon' webseries for piquing his interest in the Godzilla franchise, was deadset on having Rolfe appear in the film as an extra or bit-part. Although he initially agreed, James Rolfe ultimately had to turn down any offer due to the impending birth of his second child.
