When initially signaling an aircraft, the aircraft didn't shoot at him, but dropped flares. After the death of Duane, he returned to the abandoned village and retrieved the white parachute from one of the flares. When he was eventually rescued, he was spotted when the spotter plane saw the waving motion of the flare parachute.
