Michael Caine recommended Vivien Merchant for the role of Lily Clamacraft having previously appearing together in Merchant's then husband Harold Pinter's play The Room at the Royal Court Theatre in 1960. Director Lewis Gilbert asked Merchant to screen test and she refused. When Gilbert told Caine this, Caine replied, "Sod the screen test! Give her the part!"
