Leone had mentioned in an interview that the idea for Eastwood's poncho came from his vision of the hero's upper body being more like American muscleman Steve Reeves, whom he had approached for the part while Reeves was in Italy making his "sword and sandal" films. In a 1994 interview Reeves also acknowledged that Leone had approached him, but he turned the director down because he did not agree with promoting the smoking of cigars, as Reeves was a health and fitness fanatic throughout his adult life. He also acknowledged that Eastwood turned out to be ideal for the role anyway.
