The ZAZ team discovered the old 1957 air disaster movie Ora zero (1957) during their practice of taping late-night TV in order to find commercials worth spoofing in their sketch comedy troupe, Kentucky Fried Theater. They copied the script as an exercise in learning how to write a screenplay. But their original screenplay for "Airplane!" also incorporated parodies of late-night TV ads.
