Early concept art reveals The Penguin was supposed to simply look like Colin Farrell. The hair and wardrobe looks ranged from sleazy to a sleek 1920s gangster. As an homage to The Penguin's distinctive nose, the design included a prosthetic nose that would be crooked from injuries. However, upon meeting with Farrell, who had gained weight for a role, director Matt Reeves was inspired by his larger frame. When Farrell declined to keep the weight due to health issues, Reeves decided to give him padding to achieve the look.
