Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel first pitched a Superboy character to Detective Comics (now DC Comics) in November 1938. The idea was rejected twice before the publisher noticed the appeal of young superheroes such as Batman's sidekick Robin. The Superboy comic debuted in 1944.
