Besides the obvious (the cast and the writing talent), a great part of the appeal of this sitcom was the "cozy effect": the warm cinematography which lit the actors in a pleasant light; the use of primary (or lively) colors in wardrobe/costumes; and the the home setting, where most of the scenes took place. Warmth was provided by the set decor and design. The kitchen was outfitted with lots of copper pots; its swinging wood door led to the homey living room, where the characters sat on (or stood around) the floral couch; at back was a comfy fireplace with a horse figurine on the mantelpiece. Some walls were made of small boulders which very much enhanced the welcoming feel of the place. The outdoor scenes were lit in such a way as to often conjure up Connecticut in the fall. All this contributed in creating the '80's "Who's the Boss magic".
