Producers Iain Canning and Emile Sherman both had previously worked with screenwriter Luke Davies on Anton Corbijn's Life (2015) and also on the filmed adaption of his novel Paradiso + Inferno (2006). Canning said: "Having worked with Luke on two previous films, we felt that he had the right sort of emotional sensibility to tackle this story."
