The diner in which the Riddler is captured looks to have been inspired by Edward Hopper's famous 1942 painting "Nighthawks". The Riddler is seen, much like the subject of the painting, sitting alone, stirring a cup of coffee. Of the piece, Hopper stated that "unconsciously, probably, I was painting the loneliness of a large city." This mood is mirrored flawlessly in The Batman's Gotham: a bustling city of fluorescence and promise that continually fails to emerge from its bleak and isolating shackles.
