For the script's structure, Colin Trevorrow said he had been inspired by Steven Spielberg's Il ponte delle spie (2015), in which two seemingly unrelated stories "collide in the middle, and move on together." Trevorrow was also inspired by I tre giorni del Condor (1975), stating, "It's one of those places where you think you know what the score is, and then everything changes, and then suddenly you don't know who to trust."
