Stephen Boyd's character is basically an alcoholic, but since most older movies have the male characters (especially of the business class) always having a drink in their hand with a cigarette going (like the show Mad Men would pay homage), it's not entirely clear that he's what Rona Jaffe describes as "a drunk" in the commentary.
