Robert Eggers stated on the commentary track that he largely omitted the Rus vikings being tattooed despite otherwise following Ahmed Ibn Fadlan's account of them very closely because he wanted his film to stand apart from other contemporary viking fiction. Eggers notes he believes this current trope to be more influenced by modern appreciation of tattoos rather than trying to be truthful to real viking aesthetics and the Rus are the only group of vikings which are described as having been tattooed. In the final film, only the Rus captain Volodymyr (Ralph Ineson) is shown with tattoos.
