Anatoli Boukreev, played by Ingvar Sigurdsson in the film, died on 25 December 1997, while ascending the Nepalese mountain Annapurna. Boukreev's memoirs, "Above the Clouds: The Diaries of a High-Altitude Mountaineer," were published posthumously in 2001, after being edited by his companion Linda Wylie.
