Marc Chagall was a modernist painter who was also known for his work in stained glass, tapestry, and ceramics. As may be noted from the poster in William's flat, Chagall had an extraordinary long-life, passing away in 1985 at the advanced age of 97. He was the very last of the modernists, outliving Joan Miró by two years. Chagall's work serves as somewhat of a metaphor for William's life, having distinct yet somewhat odd images swirling around in an abstract world, seeking a more settled life.
