In 1784, Louis XVI purchased the Chateau de Saint-Cloud (previously owned by the Dukes of Orleans) on behalf of his wife. Marie Antoinette wanted this palace to serve as a private residence for herself until her death. She planned to leave it as an inheritance to whichever of her children she thought more suitable for it.
