The film rights were bought after the success of the Twilight films, but it wasn't put into production until after The Hunger Games had been a success. In order to distinguish Divergent from The Hunger Games, director Neil Burger emphasized the urban setting (in contrast to the rural setting of the arena in The Hunger Games) - and used lots of sharp, neon colors.
