The character of Jess Felton was scripted as being blonde in all versions despite actress Renee Olstead actually being naturally red-haired. Fortunately during the film's final 2013 casting call, in which Olstead auditioned for the role, she was donning the needed color, as following the final season of La vita segreta di una teenager americana (2008), in which she portrayed recurring to main character Madison Cooperstein, she transitioned from her natural hair color to blonde. The script and writers' notes on each of the characters however read that Jess was to appear to quite obviously a natural blonde to like had been done with previous classic mainstream meta slasher horror film Scream (1996), a contrast between the lead female protagonist and her best friend. Despite the script and its notes footage had to be deleted of Jess' Facebook after the finalizing of her death sequence so as to not clearly display on her page the high school stills of her Madison Cooperstein red hair but rather her final season blonde hair.
