The name of the Deaf educational facility was "The Governor Kittridge School for the Deaf." Some scenes for the movie were filmed on Kittridge Island, just off the coast of New Brunswick in Canada. Exteriors of the school were filmed at Rothesay Netherwood School, a boarding school in New Brunswick. However, the school itself is actually based on the Governor Baxter School for the Deaf, located on Mackworth Island, just off the coast of Portland, Maine.
