Two sets - an 850-foot stretch of Boylston Street in Boston, made up of two groups of storefronts approximately 500 feet apart; and the shells of 11 houses on Laurel Street in Watertown, where police encounter the Tsarnaevs - were built on and near a runway at the former Naval Air Station (now the Union Point sports and condo complex) in South Weymouth, Massachusetts. The first group of storefronts, closest to the finish line in the movie, happens to have been built in front of the spot where two crosswalks had been painted on the runway nearly a year earlier for the Times Square set of Ghostbusters (2016). The bleachers, barriers and other equipment at the scene were the ones that had just been used in the 2016 Boston Marathon. Green screens were used above and around the storefronts and bleachers for set extension purposes in post-production.The Watertown set was built because the actual Laurel Street residents did not want extensive gunfire and explosion effects filmed in front of their homes, especially so soon after the actual event. Plans to shoot on a similar street in Malden were scrapped at the last minute, when director Peter Berg decided he didn't want to subject those residents to the action effects either. Ordered to build a replica of the street at Union Point, production designer Tom Duffield found a small road near the runway where the houses could quickly be built. Berg was able to shoot the action there exactly how he wanted.After filming was completed, the sets were purchased from the production company by Union Point's then-management company, LStar, who wanted to leave them standing and make them available for other film and TV productions to shoot on, in an attempt to style Union Point as a potential mini-movie studio. The Watertown set was used for police and fire department training.The sets subsequently fell into disrepair, with the Watertown houses also being subject to heavy graffiti and other vandalism. By October 2020, all of them had been torn down, and only the Boylston Street pavement remains.
