Laura Dean and Antonia Franceschi were real-life students at the New York High School For Performing Arts when they were cast. Gene Anthony Ray had attended the school, but was expelled after a year. When he auditioned for the movie he was a student at Julia Richman High School (now part of the Julia Richman Educational Complex).
