Joe Hallenbeck (Bruce Willis) gets the drop on a man who is holding him at gunpoint by distracting him with jokes. Disarming a gunman through a diversion is one of screenwriter Shane Black's trademarks, also seen in Spy (1996) and his directorial debut Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005).
