The series' producers intended to make a show about the day-to-day adventures of lifeguards. But NBC wanted a murder mystery, with lifeguards solving crimes that washed up on their beach. Original cast member Parker Stevenson, meanwhile, was picturing a Hill Street giorno e notte (1981)-on-the-water type of show. They ended up with a firefighter-cop-doctor-rescue procedural all in one.
