The name of the fictional town of Kattegat is an anachronism. The name itself refers to a strait between Denmark and Sweden. It is derived from the Swedish/Danish word "kat" (cat) and gat (hole, gate), a lingo for a strait so narrow that a cat would have problems fitting through. This term was coined in 15th century some 600 years after the narrative of the show. The area was known as Norwegian sea or Jótlandshaf (Jutland Sea) during the time of Ragnar and his sons.
