Gary Oldman says he accepted the role of Sirius Black because he "needed the work". He hadn't acted for over a year, as he had taken time off to be with his family. His last movie was Sin - Peccato mortale (2003), which was filmed in 2002. He also took the role to please his sons. The part made Oldman a hero with them and their schoolmates.
