The script was written in 1993. The film was optioned at an independent company called Motion Picture Corporation of America (MPCA), which wanted Chris Farley to play Buddy. In an interview on I film della nostra infanzia: Elf (2020) writer David Berenbaum felt that it would have been a "completely different movie" with Farley in the lead and decided not to sell the project to MPCA.
