Way till the Nineties Budd Schulberg toyed with the idea of a sequel. He had submitted the screenplay to Trilogy Entertainment. The sequel titled " Back on the Waterfront" proposed to have Karl Malden returning in his original role of the Catholic priest and an aged Marlon Brando reprising his character Terry Malloy. The sequel set in 1993, proposed to have action revolving around Malloy's illegitimate son. However, the project was shelved.
