Many critics have commented on the exploitative nature of the scene where Ripley strips down to her underwear, for no real reason plot-wise except to be titillating for the audience, just to be attacked by the Alien once more. James Cameron, who directed the sequel Aliens - Scontro finale (1986) and who was a big fan of the movie, hated that one scene. In a recent interview Cameron said "I hated that scene... When I saw it, I vowed if I became a director I would never make women shoot scenes like that again". Originally, the scene made more sense in terms of the plot. The Alien was supposed to be more of a sexual predator, and he is hiding in the ship's machinery as Ripley strips; and at that point, when he sees her naked, being somehow triggered, he compulsively jumps out at her. There was also going to be a weird beauty and the beast moment where naked Ripley faces off against the naked alien. Most of this was scuttled and these themes are toned down in the final film, so while the sexual undercurrents are still hinted at, ostensibly it just became the hidden alien suddenly jumping out at Ripley who is unclothed and vulnerable.
