Jimmy Braddock's ("James J.") African-American corner man was Joe Jeanette, who owned the New Jersey gym where Braddock often trained. Jeanette was a top-flight heavyweight contender during the 1900s and 1910s, but never received a title shot because of the racial climate of the time.
