Development began in 2004 at Revolution Studios between Wes Anderson and animation director Henry Selick, who had worked with Anderson on Le avventure acquatiche di Steve Zissou (2004) (and who had directed another stop-motion animated film based on a Roald Dahl work, James e la pesca gigante (1996).) When Revolution folded, Selick left the project to direct Coraline e la porta magica (2009), and was replaced by Mark Gustafson.
