In the DC comic universe, Lex Luthor's relationship with Clark is almost exclusively as Superman; they never even met whilst at school. The exception is an alternative reality one-off story in 1960 which attempted to explain Lex's hair loss. This story had them both as childhood friends but has largely been ignored or discredited since. Lana Lang and Pete Ross feature heavily in the comic universe as Clark's childhood friends.
