Plans for a sequel were abandoned after the film was not successful at the box office. In 2019, Ghostbusters: Legacy (2021) was announced as the next film in the franchise, which follows the original timeline of Ghostbusters (Acchiappafantasmi) (1984) and Ghostbusters II (Acchiappafantasmi II) (1989), rather than the alternative one established by this movie.
