Robert Wise previously directed West Side Story (1961) and Tutti insieme appassionatamente (1965). The male leads of those films; Richard Beymer and Christopher Plummer; both went on to appear in Star Trek (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Homecoming (1993) and Rotta verso l'ignoto (1991), respectively). In addition, Plummer's role was previously played by Theodore Bikel, who played Worf's adoptive father on Star Trek: The Next Generation: Family (1990).
