Apparently, the Musicians Union later insisted the songs being lip-synced to the original single versions, were re-recorded to create more employment for musicians. During the later BBC 2 and BBC Four re-runs, and compilations, there's a notable change during a long period of the series run of the original released audio re-recordings being re-produced, with presumably BBC "session" musicians, giving the vibe of a live music performance. (This may well have meant that certain musicians that performed on the original release were re-recording the TOTP re-version). This re-recording policy later evolved to reverting back to miming to the released version, and in the final few years of the original first-run, fully live in-studio performances were the preference - as The Tube, Old Grey Whistle Test, and Later with Jools Holland were known for a non-mime fully live performance policy by then.
