Psychologically Travis's failures at socializing, particularly with women, stem from his lack of experience and education. He's psychologically and emotionally stuck in junior high, with his inability to gauge his own social status with the opposite sex, and his attempts to score "out of his league", based on a woman's appearance and glamour alone. He has also failed to develop a sense of humor, especially about himself. This misguided male focus, portrayed so often in film, for instance "Marty" (1955), or just about any teen exploitation film from the 80s onward, could have been prevented with a simple readjustment of his self image; with realistic expectations, and would have saved him a lot of grief, and bloodletting.
