A stage musical adaptation opened in the US in 1978, initially with Howard Keel and Jane Powell reprising their roles. It briefly toured the US, eventually leading to Broadway in 1982, but a bad review from The New York Times meant it was canceled after just five performances. It later premiered in the UK on the West End in 1985, with revivals in 2006 and 2015.
