Mai (rice), the sister of Baku (wheat), is mentioned only once and never seen. But rice, as a grain, is treated carefully thereafter and mostly tied to Ryôhei:Ryôhei works for a sake brewing company (sake is made from rice), talks over the phone with his mother who is sending him rice, and serves rice with curry (in fact, ratatouille) for himself, sitting side by side with Asako eating bread, which is made from wheat and is the food she couldn't receive from Baku after his first absence in Osaka. (Moreover, the old guy Baku gave away the bread he bought was named "Yoneda" (not subtitled), which means rice field.)
