Paul Brooke learned from his agent that he had got the part of the Rancor keeper during a stop-off in Calcutta whilst touring a play in India for the British Council. His brief role was shot over the 16th and 17th of March 1982, the first scene being with Mark Hamill. The subsequent scene were he cried at the Rancor's death was filmed against a bluescreen on day two.
