When the Japanese Film industry began to decline due to competition from television in the late 1960's and early 1970's, Toho created the Toho Champion Festival which were seasonal matinee festivals that were held three times a year aimed at children. Every Godzilla film, except for the first two, would be re-released through these events. This meant that the films needed to be shortened and edited. Honda himself was the one in charge of doing these changes. The creation of the Champion festival cuts of King Kong vs. Godzilla would prove controversial because the original film negative was re-cut and edited. This meant that when the film was released on home video, several scenes that were missing had to be replaced from a sub-par print. This would be the state of the film until a new print would be discovered.
