In 1986, writer Bob Gale of Back to the Future fame was hired to write a theatrical Dr. Strange movie to be directed by Wes Craven for New World Pictures, who owned Marvel at the time. Due to budgetary reasons and unfamiliarity to non-comic readers, the film was cancelled.
