Sir Hiss assents to nearly all of King John's machinations, objecting only to his plan to hang Friar Tuck. While John never did execute a member of the clergy, he did at one point refuse to accept the Pope's appointee for Archbishiop of Canterbury, leading to England being placed under a Papal Interdict for six years. This meant that the people of England could not attend church, receive sacraments, or be buried on church territory.
