During the scene where Aldritch Killian shows Pepper the hologram of his Brain in his Extremis pitch, he mentions how there are parts of the human nervous system that are destined to be upgraded and that Extremis can do that. This could also be a reference to the Inhumans and the procedure of using Terrigen Mists to awaken their alien superpowers, since at the time, Marvel Studios was attempting to build up to an Inhumans movie until it wound up becoming the short-lived TV show.
