One source of information states that Walt Disney got the idea for an animated feature when he passed a cinema showing 80 minutes of Mickey Mouse cartoons which the audience were enjoying. He thought if they would sit through a programme of that length of short cartoons then they would be just as likely to sit through a cartoon feature of similar length. When he was a boy he'd seen a silent film of Snow White which made such an impression on him that it influenced his decision to use the fairy tale when he decided to make a feature length cartoon In 1934 Walt and his writers and animators started discussing story lines. Production started in 1935 and continued through to shortly before the premiere. 750 artists including 32 animators 102 assistant animators, 65 special effects animators and 25 background artists worked on the film, It took 2 months for the studio chemists to mix over 1,500 paint colours in order to determine the final tones and shades, Some 150 girl were tested for the voice of Snow White including Deanna Durbin, who was just on the thresh hold of her career but Walt rejected her as he thought her voice was too mature. For some years after the film was made the identity of the girl behind Snow White's voice was kept secret but as many people now know the girl was Adriana Caselotti. In the original story by the Brothers Grimm the dwarfs do not have names but amongst those considered for the films characters were Scrappy, Hoppy, Weepy, Dirty, Crawly, Hungry, Lazy, Gabby, Jumpy, Sniffy, Stubby, Wheezy, Puffy, Shorty, Helpful, Awful, Silly and Daffy The initial budget for the film was half a million dollars but by the time it was completed it was reputed to have cost 1 &1/2 million and many people in Hollywood expected it to flop, in fact while it was being made it was being called 'Disney's Folly' However on it's first release it grossed over 8 &1/2million dollars and was estimated to have been seen by 20 million people in the first 3 months, At the Academy Award ceremony in 1938 Walt Disney was presented with a full, size Oscar and 7 miniature replicas, The inscription read' To Walt Disney for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' recognised as a significant screen innovation which has charmed millions and pioneered a great new entertainment field When the film was released in Britain it was given an A certificate which meant that children under 16 couldn't see it without an adult. This was because the censor thought it was too frightening for children even after some scenes had been cut or shortend, These included scenes of Snow White running through the forest to get away from the huntsman, in particiular the section where the trees seem to come alive and the logs in the river seem to turn into crocodiles, the scene where the witch escaping from the dwarfs climbs a mountain she tries to push a boulder down on them but the cliff edge collapses and she falls over the edge with a long scream, a lot of which was cut. A number of scenes were cut during production which included the prince in chains in the dungeon, the Queen , on discovering the huntsman's deception has him dragged away by torturers, dancing skeletons in the dungeon, a fight between Dozy and Grumpy, the dwarves making a bed for Snow White, the Queen gives Snow White a poisoned comb from which she recovers before giving her the apple, The Queen in a rage smashes the mirror which reassembles its self. After the film was completed Walt cut 3 scenes partly to shorten the running time and partly to help the action flow more smoothly, these were a scene showing Snow White's mother, a soup eating sequence with the dwarfs and Snow White telling the Dwarfs a story. Such was the acclaim for the film that a Star with Snow White's name on it was placed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and at the Chelsea Flower Show a rose was named 'Snow White Rose'
