Jason Bateman has said that Rupert Pupkin is one of his favorite all time acting performances. He regarded De Niro's acting style as Pupkin as the perfect example on how to perform at a high level consistently throughout a whole movie, but without ever losing the audience's sympathy or dropping the ball by becoming self aware or congratulatory.
