The captured Japanese pilot is played by Korean-born actor Soon-Tek Oh. While some critics assert that Oh was miscast because he "does not look remotely Japanese", Korea was incorporated into the Japanese Empire from the end of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905 to the end of World War II, and several thousand Koreans were inducted into the Japanese armed forces during the period of Japanese rule prior to December 1941, including as pilots in the Japanese Naval and Army Air Forces. Oh himself was born in Korea in 1932, during the period of Japanese rule.
