Loosely based on Noah Baumbach's personal experience of being divorced from Jennifer Jason Leigh. Charlie's cheating on Nicole with Mary Ann during the marriage is inspired by Noah's cheating on Jennifer with Greta Gerwig during the filming of Lo stravagante mondo di Greenberg (2010).
