As producer Alexandra Rose was moving ahead with developing this picture, it came to the attention, from another source, of Tom Hanks and Howard W. Koch, president of RASTAR. Both Koch and Hanks had been seeking a story to develop. All three interests merged under the RASTAR banner, and when director Garry Marshall indicated interest, Tri-Star Pictures became involved.
